I often receive questions from community members about Easter’s length. New members of our community are surprised that we continue to celebrate the Easter Season well after the Long Weekend. The Season of Easter is longer than the Season of Lent but as we do not ‘give up’ anything we often don’t mark the days in Easter and the Season passes us by. We meet each week as a community during the season and share prayer and masses to celebrate Easter and the message that ‘He Is Risen’.
Here are some facts about the Easter Season that you may find interesting.
Days
Easter Season begins on Easter Day (Easter Sunday) and lasts 50 days, ending on Pentecost.
Date
In 325 AD, the ‘church council of Nicea’ decided that Easter should be made a true holiday. They established that it should be held on the first Sunday after the full moon, after the 21st of March, which is the Equinox. This means that Easter can land anywhere between late March and late April.
Colours:
In most churches, the decorations are white and gold.
The East:
Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar to calculate Easter Day and adjust the date so that it falls after the Jewish Passover. This year the date of Easter Sunday is 5th May. For them, Easter Season also lasts fifty days, ending on Pentecost.
REGIONAL ASSEMBLY
Have you ever been curious about the many branches of our local Catholic church: schools, organisations, outreach… There will be presentations, displays, sausage sizzle and opportunities for you to ask questions.
On May 4th you are invited to visit The Regional Assembly. It will take place at Sacred Heart Champagnat Campus. 28 Percy Ave, Mitchell Park. A flier invitation is included in this newsletter.
WAYS TO PRAY- A SERIES
Contemplation
One of the aims of contemplation is to simply be in the presence of God, as one might with a friend. It is often accompanied by a conscious stilling of our mind and body, which can help us to become aware of God’s quiet presence. The repetition of a particular word or phrase, or concentrating on our posture or breathing, can help to remove distractions so that we can concentrate on God.
PROJECT COMPASSION
Thank you to the many families who have sent in their collection boxes. The school will do a final tally and send the money into Caritas at the end of Wk. 1 Term 2 (3rd May). We will gladly collect boxes until then.
