Week 3, Term 1 2023
Hello Friends,
I trust this term has begun positively for you and your family. One of the great things about being Principal at CTK is the opportunity to visit the classrooms on a daily basis and witness, the quality learning that occurs each day. It’s wonderful to see our children engaged in their studies and asking and answering questions about their learning. Five key components to ask your child about their learning at home are
- What are you learning? Why?
- How are you doing?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where do you go, or can you go for help?
Parents and Friends
Our Parents and Friends group met on Tuesday 7 February and it was fantastic to see so many new faces there. The P and F are planning amazing fund and friend raising events for 2023. If you are interested in helping with these events, even if you cannot attend P and F meetings, we appreciate your time. Just let your class teacher know and we can place you touch with a P and F Rep.
Pick Up and Drop off at School
We have noticed an increase in traffic in both directions on Jeffrey Ave and reduced parking availability as builders’ cars use this street for building access to the new homes being built there. It may be worthwhile using Walkley Tce to drop off and collect to help minimise the traffic congestion on Jeffrey Ave.
Uniform
Please ensure that your child comes to school in the correct school uniform. I understand that from time to time, suppliers do not have some items in stock or items are in the wash or haven’t dried in time for school. If this is the case, please let your child’s teacher know via an email or note into school.
School Board Talk: Board Walk to Classrooms
The School Board met on Wednesday 8 February and we ‘toured the school’, visiting each class. We were able to witness the ‘bump it up walls’ in our classroom. Essentially a ‘bump it up wall’ provides the students with the opportunity to check their work/draft and see where that piece of work fits with a moderation process or success criteria. If you have the opportunity to see your child’s ‘bump it up wall’, you’ll see the value of them.
Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.

Next Wednesday we will gather as a community to commemorate Ash Wednesday. It is preceded by Shrove Tuesday, a day to empty out the pantry of all the good things of life. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the 6-week Season of Lent within many Christian Churches. It traditionally has been a day of fasting and prayer. In the modern world it has become more of a day of prayer and promise.
Ashes are placed on the head as either a sprinkling or marked on the forehead in the shape of a cross. In our community it is used as a reminder that we all make choices we are not proud of, God is there to support us to make better choices.
The students are reminded to think of their cross throughout the day, but not to keep showing it to others. They are encouraged to wear it during the day and let it gently disappear as the day progresses. Sharing it with parents is a positive thing as it can lead to a discussion about their goal/promise for Lent.
The placement of Ashes is not confined to members of the Christian faith. Ashes can be placed on whomever wishes to receive them, much like many people take on a Lenten challenge but do not profess to be Christians or church goers.
As a community we will gather at 11.20am to share an Ash Wednesday Prayer Service and all are invited to attend.
For those who are unable to make the service ashes will be available for all at the Front Office. (I will be on the side gate on Wednesday and Matt will be on the back gate with the ashes from 3.10-3.30 for those who would like to receive ashes.)
Lenten promises cover everything from giving up chocolate to going for a morning run. Whilst Christians are called to repent and reflect during Lent many of us also see it as a 6 week challenge to better ourselves. And that is exactly what the church is asking us to do to improve.
At school we encourage the staff and student to ‘Take Something Up’ e.g. If you are shy, say hello to a new person each day, If you are competitive offer your place in line, If you aren’t good at seeing what other’s do, compliment a family member on an action… these actions make us deal with the world and those around us in a reflective and beautiful way.
All the best with your challenge if you wish to give it a go.
Project Compassion
The work of Project Compassion is a major pillar of the season of Lent. At school we will highlight others who need our support to build dignity and basic needs such as food or water security. Each family receives a box to collect spare change through the season. Some family members may wish to donate the money they would normally use to buy the treat. Boxes can be returned in weeks 10/11 of term. Class may choose to plan a fundraiser to add to the overall school total.
Support for Turkey and Syria
Building compassion in our students is an area that supports our Catholic ethos and ongoing values. The older classes have been sharing a prayer for those people affected by natural disasters. Next Tuesday students can participate in a Shrove Tuesday pancake recess. A gold coin donation can be deposited in return for a pancake (gluten free options available). All money raised will go to the ‘Save the Children’ fundraiser. We are aiming to raise $150 to give 30 children a blanket to keep warm through the harsh Winter.
